The Valley takes its name from the homonymous village that rises around the Rocca di Pierle.

This territory is located in the westernmost part of the municipality of Cortona and is crossed by the border that separates Umbria and Tuscany.

The hilly chain comprising Monte Maestrino and Poggio della Croce, in turn, divides this valley from the nearby Val d'Esse (Cortona).

The only way of communication was a Roman road that crossed the saddle, of which there are still some original features and is included in the archaeological park.

The valley develops along the river niccone and is rich in places of historical interest starting precisely from the Castle of Pierle and continuing beyond Mercatale we meet the church of the Madonna della Croce dating back to the sixteenth century and still beyond the castle of Sorbello dating back to the tenth century.
